Journey map
Withdrawal Journey Map: Request to Funds Received
A withdrawal has four stages to review: request, checks, processing and completion. Great Britain bans reverse withdrawals, and rule text posted in New Jersey (adoption not confirmed) would bar cancellation for three days. Each stage below names the goal, the friction, what helps and the rule to check.
The map
| Stage | What the player is trying to do | Friction to look for | Support moment | Accessibility check | Rule or standard |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Request | Ask for their money with a method they recognize | Withdrawal option harder to find than deposit; unclear minimums | Withdrawal shown beside deposit in the cashier, with method, minimum and fees stated | Amount field with a visible label and an error message in text | CMA case on online gambling: withdrawal obstacles were among the practices examined |
| Checks | Know whether more documents are needed and why | New document requests appear only after the request, with no deadline explained | One message that lists every document still needed and how to send it | Instructions readable by screen readers, not only inside images | Great Britain: identity verification moved before gambling in 2019 |
| Processing | See progress and expected timing | Status labels such as 'pending' with no time or next step; prompts to cancel | Status with a date, the next step and how long it usually takes | Status updates announced without moving focus (WCAG 4.1.3) | Great Britain: reverse withdrawals banned from October 31, 2021; New Jersey posted rule text (adoption not confirmed) would bar patron cancellation for three days |
| Completed | Confirm the money left the account and where it went | No receipt; amount and method not restated | A receipt with amount, method, reference and date, also sent by email | Receipt readable as text and printable | Good practice; no single rule sets receipt content |
How to use this map
Run a real withdrawal in a test account for each payment method you offer, and fill in each cell from what you see and receive, including emails and app notifications. The rule column names the requirement to confirm with compliance for each market. The map is our template, built from published rules and the UK competition authority's case record; it does not describe any operator and contains no measured timings.
Stage notes
Request
The first check is findability: is withdrawal in the same cashier as deposit, with the same prominence? Then the facts: methods, minimum amount, fees and usual processing time, shown before the player types an amount. The UK competition authority's online gambling case examined obstacles to withdrawals, including low withdrawal limits.
Checks
Extra identity or payment checks can be needed at this point. The player should get one message listing everything still required and how to send it. Since 2019, British operators must verify identity before customers gamble, which reduces the need for surprise checks at withdrawal.
Processing
The pending screen should show the status in words, the date of the last change and the usual time to the next step, and nothing that invites the player to cancel. Great Britain banned reverse withdrawals with effect from October 31, 2021, and rule text posted in New Jersey (file dated October 19, 2026; adoption not confirmed) would bar patron cancellation for three days. Status updates should be announced to screen readers under WCAG 2.2 criterion 4.1.3. The withdrawal clarity paper quotes both rules.
Completed
The player should receive a receipt with amount, method, reference and date, on screen and by email. No single rule sets receipt content, so this stage follows good practice; the withdrawal receipts field note gives a model.
Questions to ask at the end
- Was withdrawing as easy to find and complete as depositing?
- Did the player know the timing before confirming?
- Was there any route back from a pending withdrawal into the balance?
- Were document requests made once, together, with a reason?
- Did every status change arrive in words, with a date?
Questions
Should the map include chargebacks or disputes?
Those are separate flows with their own rules and support processes. This map covers the standard path from request to money received; add a branch for disputes if your review needs it.
How many payment methods should we test?
Every method a player can withdraw to, because timing, fees and checks differ between cards, bank transfers and e-wallets.
